Online Sports Degrees and Practical Requirements

Many sports programmes depend on placements, supervised hours and in-person assessment. What to check about delivery, campus visits, labs and location before assuming a degree can be completed fully online.

"Online" is a delivery label, not a promise that every requirement can be met from home. In sport, many qualifications depend on practice: clinical hours, laboratory work, coaching placements or supervised client contact. Some degrees are genuinely taught online and then ask you to arrange practice locally. Others are not available online at all for regulated roles. This guide lists what to establish before you commit.

Whole programme or part programme

Ask whether the entire award can be completed without attending anywhere, or only the coursework. A programme page may say "online" about lectures while exams, labs, residencies or placements are in person. Write down every in-person component and its timing, then check whether you can meet it.

Live or asynchronous

Live sessions fix you to a timetable and time zone. Asynchronous study is flexible but may offer less contact with staff. Neither is better in itself, but the difference matters if you work shifts or live abroad. Ask how much interaction with instructors is scheduled and how assessment is done and invigilated.

Where regulated roles require practice

The examples below come from bodies that regulate or certify, and show why delivery mode cannot be judged from the course name alone.

  • Athletic training (US). CAATE accredits professional programmes, and says that graduates of accredited programmes are qualified to sit the Board of Certification exam. The BOC states that candidates must graduate from a CAATE-accredited programme (or qualify through its international arrangement). Both are accreditor and certifier pages; the detailed clinical education standards sit in CAATE's standards documents, which you should read for the programme you are considering. The BOC also says certification does not itself grant a licence and that most states regulate the profession, so state rules apply separately.
  • Dietetics (UK). The BDA's career FAQ says all dietetic courses are full time and that there is no distance learning route to becoming a dietitian.
  • Sport and exercise psychology (UK). The BPS Stage 2 qualification requires access to a suitable placement, paid or voluntary, and a supervisor-led portfolio assessed with a viva.
  • Mental performance consultant (AASP). The certification requires 400 hours of mentored experience, with mentors approved by the certification council. The mentored hours are in addition to the degree.

For these roles, an online master's may cover the academic component, but the supervised element still has to be arranged, and you should confirm with the relevant body that the combination is accepted.

Geographic restrictions

A programme may enrol students from only some places. In the US, the State Authorization Reciprocity Agreement (SARA) is described by NC-SARA as setting comparable national standards for interstate postsecondary distance education, and it keeps a directory of approved institutions. SARA concerns authorisation to offer distance education across states; whether a programme leads to a particular state's professional licence is a separate question for that state's licensing board. Ask the provider in writing which places it enrols from and whether it states a position on licensure in your location.

Questions to put in writing

  1. Which components, if any, require in-person attendance, and for how long?
  2. Who finds and approves the placement or supervisor, and who pays for it?
  3. How many supervised or practice hours are required, and who signs them off?
  4. Which accreditor or regulator, if any, approves this exact delivery format?
  5. Is there a location restriction on where students may live or practise?

A note on our listings

Our directory records delivery format as published by each provider and does not infer eligibility for registration or licence from it. Where a page does not state a requirement, we leave it blank rather than assume. Read Choosing a Sports Degree for the wider comparison, and Understanding Athletic Training for one practice-heavy example.
